Across veterinary references the typical pet guinea pig lives 4 to 8 years. The RSPCA quotes 4 to 8; most exotics vets say a well-kept cavy should be expected to see 5 to 7 at minimum. Breed matters far less than people hope: long-haired Peruvians and Silkies trend slightly shorter than short-haired Americans, mostly because coat care problems pile stress on, and hairless skinny pigs need warmth to stay well. The gap that actually matters is between a guinea pig fed properly and one that is not.

What shortens a guinea pig's life
No vitamin C. Guinea pigs share a quirk with humans: their bodies cannot make vitamin C. Without 10 to 30 mg a day from peppers, leafy greens or a supplement, scurvy develops within weeks: rough coat, sore joints, bleeding gums, then infections the body cannot fight. This is the classic preventable killer.
Not enough hay. Cavy teeth grow continuously and only hours of daily chewing keeps them ground down. A bowl-food diet leads to overgrown molars, mouth pain, and a pig that starves next to a full bowl. Hay should be roughly 80% of the diet, available always.
Muesli-style mixes. Pretty rainbow mixes let pigs eat the sweet bits and skip the rest. Plain pellets, one tablespoon a day, is the vet-standard amount.
Heat. Anything above about 26°C is dangerous territory; guinea pigs cannot sweat and heatstroke kills fast. A garage in July or a hutch in direct sun is a genuine hazard.
Loneliness. These are herd animals. Chronic solo stress is real enough that Swiss welfare law bans keeping a guinea pig alone. A bonded pair is the default, not a luxury.
Damp, drafts and dirty bedding. Respiratory infection is one of the most common causes of death. Dry bedding, good airflow without drafts, and skipping cedar or pine shavings all protect the lungs.
Senior care from age 4 to 5
Around age 4 to 5 a guinea pig crosses into its sixties in human terms. Three habits catch problems early: weigh weekly on kitchen scales (loss of 50 g or more in a week means a vet visit), book a checkup every 6 months instead of yearly, and watch eating speed, since slowing down on hay is usually teeth. Cataracts and stiff joints are common and manageable; sudden changes are the thing to act on.
