How Long Do Rabbits Live?

A rabbit is not a starter pet, whatever the Easter marketing says. An indoor rabbit routinely makes 8 to 12 years, which is dog-commitment territory. Here is what your rabbit's breed and setup say about the years ahead, and the three decisions that add the most.

TL;DR: Indoor pet rabbits typically live 8 to 12 years. Dwarf and small breeds often pass 10, giant breeds average 5 to 8, outdoor hutch rabbits commonly get just 4 to 7. Record: 18 years 10.75 months (Flopsy, Guinness World Records). The three big levers: living indoors, spaying or neutering, and a diet that is mostly hay.

The pattern is the same as in dogs: small lives long, giant lives fast. A Netherland Dwarf reaching 12 is unremarkable; a Flemish Giant reaching 8 is a triumph. Mixed-breed rabbits of medium size usually land in the 8 to 10 band.

The three big levers

1. Indoors beats the hutch, by years. The traditional bottom-of-the-garden hutch rabbit lives 4 to 7 years; the same rabbit indoors averages 8 to 12. The difference is temperature extremes, predator stress (a fox that cannot get in can still frighten a rabbit to death), summer flystrike, and illness that nobody notices through a wire door. If outdoors is the only option, a large insulated setup checked twice daily narrows the gap.

2. Spay or neuter. For females this is not optional in lifespan terms: uterine adenocarcinoma affects well over half of unspayed does by age 5 to 6 in the strains studied. Spaying removes the risk entirely. Neutered males fight less, spray less, and lose the abscess risk that comes with fight wounds.

3. Hay first, always. Around 85% of the diet should be grass hay. Rabbit teeth grow continuously; only hay-grade chewing wears them evenly. Muesli mixes cause selective feeding and dental disease, and dental disease is the gateway to abscesses, starvation and GI stasis. Pellets are a tablespoon-scale supplement, not the meal.

GI stasis is a 24-hour emergency. A rabbit that has not eaten or passed droppings for 12 hours is not "off their food", they are in shutdown. Gut motility failure kills rabbits in a day or two and it is treatable if caught. Same-day vet, every time.

Two more that owners miss

Flystrike. In warm months, flies lay eggs on soiled fur around a rabbit's rear; maggots hatch within hours. It is fatal in days, mostly hits outdoor or overweight rabbits that cannot groom properly, and it is fully preventable with a daily 10-second rear-end check in summer.

RHDV2 vaccination. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease kills fast and spreads on shoes and hay. Annual vaccination is standard in the UK and Ireland and has been available in the US since 2021. Indoor rabbits are not exempt; the virus travels to them.

Rabbit lifespan FAQ

How long do pet rabbits live indoors?

8 to 12 years is typical, with dwarf and small breeds regularly passing 10. Plan for a decade when you take one on.

How long do Holland Lops live?

7 to 10 years typically, longer indoors with good care. Check inside those folded ears weekly; lop ear anatomy traps wax and infection.

What is the oldest rabbit ever?

Flopsy, a wild-born rabbit caught in Tasmania in 1964, lived 18 years and 10.75 months, still the Guinness World Record.

Do giant rabbits really live shorter lives?

Yes. Flemish and Continental Giants average 4 to 8 years. Their hearts and joints carry a lot of rabbit, and they hit senior status around age 4 rather than 6 to 7.

What do most pet rabbits die of?

The common pathways are GI stasis, dental disease and its complications, uterine cancer in unspayed females, flystrike in outdoor rabbits, and RHDV2 where vaccination lapses. Most of that list is preventable, which is the encouraging part.
