How Long Do Hamsters Live?
Two to three years for most, and no, that is not because anyone did anything wrong. Hamsters are sprinters by design. The real question is which species you have, and whether their short run is a good one. This page covers both.

If lifespan matters to you at the pet-shop stage, the choice of species is the single biggest lever you will ever get. A Roborovski typically outlives a Campbell's dwarf by a factor of two.
Why so short?
Small rodents live fast. A hamster heart beats around 300 to 500 times a minute and their metabolism runs to match, so their tissues simply age at sprint pace. Tumor rates climb steeply in the second year, particularly in dwarf species. This is worth saying plainly to anyone, especially a child, grieving a two-year-old hamster: nothing was done wrong. Two good years is a hamster's version of a long and happy life.
What actually adds months
Floor space. Modern welfare guidance has moved far past the classic tiny cage: aim for at least 4,000 cm² of unbroken floor (roughly 100 × 40 cm). Small cages produce bar-chewing, stress hormones and shorter lives.
A big enough wheel. 28 cm minimum for a Syrian, 20 cm for dwarfs. A wheel that arches the back damages the spine over months of nightly kilometers.
Boring food, deep bedding. A plain quality mix or pellet, no sugary yogurt drops (especially for diabetes-prone Campbell's), and 25 cm plus of diggable bedding, since burrowing is the behavior their stress system expects.
Solitude for Syrians. Adult Syrians fight, and fight wounds abscess. One Syrian per cage, no exceptions. Dwarfs sometimes cohabit but pairs fall out; be ready to separate.
Warmth. Below about 15°C a hamster can slip into torpor: cold, limp and barely breathing. Owners bury hamsters that were alive. Warm a cold, still hamster slowly for 30 to 60 minutes before any conclusions.

2 to 3 years typically. The record for any hamster is about 4.5 years, which was almost certainly a Syrian with excellent genes and a quiet, spacious life.
How long do dwarf hamsters live?
Campbell's and winter whites typically manage 1.5 to 2 years, sometimes 2.5. Roborovskis, despite being the smallest, live longest at 3 to 3.5 years.
How old is a 1-year-old hamster in human years?

Can a hamster live to 5?
Documented cases stop around 4.5 years. Claims beyond that lack verifiable records. If yours passes 4, you are in record territory; take dated photos.
My hamster is cold and stiff. Is it dead?
Possibly in torpor, not dead, if the room is below about 15°C. Warm them gently in cupped hands or a warm room for up to an hour. Movement, whisker twitches or shallow breathing mean torpor; warm slowly and fix the room temperature.
